Chairman’s Report

2014 has started wet and windy with desperate conditions for many. The population and businesses of Elland and District have escaped relatively unscathed thanks to our position on the right side of the Pennines, but who can tell what will happen when the wind changes !

The year ahead looks likely to be an interesting one, starting on the sporting front with the Winter Olympics, the soccer World Cup and nearer to home, the Tour de France. Below is an announcement of a Public Meeting to discuss Elland’s plans for the Tour de France. We hope most of you can and will attend.

But what does all this mean for Elland and District? At the very least, the recently announced cut backs in Calderdale Council Funding for schemes and projects, and the inevitable reductions in Council front line staffing levels, means that we, the people of Elland & District, are going to have to do more for ourselves, if we wish the area to progress.

Continuing the climate theme, EDP believes that the wind of change is blowing now for us. The recent setback in the asset transfer for the Save Elland Swimming Bath Group illustrates the need for more people to get involved, and on a more professional level, if we are to move forward.

The Elland & District Partnership are striving to do just that. We have visited all of the Businesses in HX5, and have spoken with many company representatives, in an effort to attract younger, enthusiastic people with new ideas. This programme will be widened out to include HX4 at some future date.

In the meantime, the Directors of the Partnership, along with the students of Brooksbank School, have been pooling ideas as to how they feel the Town and District could be rejuvenated, and how the environment can be improved for the benefit of residents and visitors. We will continue to work on the suggestions put forward, and we will be seeking input and help from many more representatives of businesses, traders, residents, schools and voluntary groups over the next few weeks.

Please email us if you wish to be included in these upcoming conversations.

We have updated and added to the Achievements Section on the Website. It now comprises 2 pages of links to most of the events and activities that we have organised or contributed to since 2012, and to the earlier regenerations of Riverside Park and James Street Play Area
